Your phone 'may not work' from Friday, phones imported from abroad 'may be taxed'

The government has said that the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) system will be fully implemented from this week to discourage the distribution and use of illegally imported mobile phones.

The Nepal Telecommunication Authority started testing the system from 30th of August last year.

In addition, the authority has been urging the general public to check whether the mobile phone they carry is registered in the system.

By issuing a notice, the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority has requested mobile phones that are not registered in the MDMS system or are not in use before the month of August to be updated in the system as this system will be fully implemented from the 15th of January i.e. next Friday.

What is MDMS?  Does your mobile phone work then?

Mobile phones imported from abroad will be taxed from July, unregistered phones will not work.

"According to the rules, mobile phone sets that have not been declared in customs will not be registered from 15th Paush 2079 and the operation of such mobile sets will also be banned. Therefore, mobile sets brought for personal purposes must be submitted with a declaration letter on the basis of passport/citizenship/national identity card only at mdms.nta.gov.np.  It is requested to go and register," the notification said.

The Authority has requested the general public to check whether the mobile phone is registered in the MDMS system even when purchasing a mobile phone in the country.

The authority has started such an effort since it brought detailed regulations in this regard in 2018.                                                                                  The government has said that the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) system will be fully implemented from this week to discourage the distribution and use of illegally imported mobile phones.
